At Winster Primary School we provide a stimulating curriculum which engages and interests children in their learning. The Primary Statutory Curriculum is divided into two parts: the Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) and the National Curriculum.

Foundation Stage Curriculum

We plan an exciting and challenging curriculum based on our observation of children's needs, interests, and stages of development across the seven areas of learning to enable Winster teacher with pupilthe children to achieve and exceed the early learning goals. All of the seven areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected.

Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children's curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Children are also supported through four further specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design
  • When we teach phonics we use a government scheme called Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics which uses actions with sounds. Letters and sounds aims to build children's speaking and listening skills as well as preparing children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.

    The National Curriculum

    We have an exciting skills based curriculum at Winster C of E Primary School. We follow the new National Curriculum which became a statutory requirement in September 2014.

    In Key Stages 1 and 2 (Infant and Junior), learning is developed through a creative curriculum approach. We encourage children to ask questions and develop independent skills in their learning.

    Beyond the Curriculum

    We begin each new topic with a "WOW DAY" which immediately enthuses the children in their new topic and brings it to life. Each week we have a creativity afternoon to enhance our curriculum. All children take part in Forest Schools, Food technology, and art and design.

    A range of visits enhances our children's learning and broadens their knowledge and experiences. We offer a variety of after school clubs which vary throughout the year including tennis, multi sports, computing, games, film, tapestry, and choir.

    Our pupils have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through taking extra-curricular lessons. A peripatetic music teacher visits the school weekly to teach the clarinet and flute.

    Key Stage 2 are welcome to attend a free Film Club every Thursday where we watch a film together and enjoy popcorn! We then review the films and post them on the website www.filmclub.org

    Pupil and Sports Premiums

    Pupil premium is money every school receives to support children who are in a group identified as being vulnerable to underacheivement in education. These groups include those children who have free school meals, adopted children, children of parents in the armed services or those who are looked after.
